More People Losing Their Driver’s Licenses

Nearly 20,000 people lost their driver’s licenses in the first half of 2024, marking a 2.6% increase compared to the same period last year, according to new figures from the Swedish Transport Agency.

The most common reason for losing a driver’s license is speeding, although the number of cases has decreased compared to the previous year.

However, more people are losing their licenses due to driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, with an increase of 2.1% compared to last year.

At the same time, the number of people who have had their licenses revoked for medical reasons has been rising for several years. In the first half of 2024, 3,600 licenses were revoked, the highest number ever recorded for this period.

“We are getting older in Sweden, and it’s quite possible that this is a contributing factor to the increase. The vast majority of revocations on medical grounds occur among those aged 75 and older,” said Mikael Andersson, Press Officer at the Swedish Transport Agency, in a press release.
