Interest in going to the movies seems to be waning in Sweden. According to recent statistics, Swedish cinemas had 350,000 fewer visitors in the first half of this year compared to the same period in 2023.
Peter Fornstam, chairman of the Swedish Cinema Owners Association, speculated on the reasons for this decline in an interview with Sveriges Radio. He suggested that the decrease might be due to fewer major film releases so far this year, which is connected to last year’s Hollywood strike.
However, the decline has been somewhat mitigated by the release of three Swedish films: “Den sista resan,” “Håkan Bråkan 2,” and “Hammarskjöld.”
According to Kulturnytt, who interviewed people on the street, ticket prices were also a significant factor contributing to the declining interest in going to the movies among the general public.
